Colt - 1860 Army Breech Loading Metallic Cartridge Revolver - 1st Model Original Cartridge Richards (aka "cartridge conversion") - .44 Colt CF; 8" barrel - Very good condition. - Mostly gray patina, with generous remainders of original blue in sheltered areas, with perhaps as much as 5-10% coverage. Case colors on frame have darkened, with mottling still distinct. Excellent cylinder scene & other markings, including s/n 2671 matching on backstrap, triggerguard, frame & barrel, and conversion no. 1574 matching on ring & gate. Cylinder & wedge are unnumbered, but look original to gun. — Although commonly referred to as "Cartridge Conversions", this particular gun was originally assembled at Colt as a cartridge revolver. - It appears likely that this is one of the highest serial number Richards to have the early 1st Model features, and may well be the highest s/n known for this configuration. These early features include "COLTS PATENT" marking instead of dates, small percussion style hammer screw, internal loading gate spring, and external conversion assembly numbers. The cutoff s/n for these features is generally listed a approximately 2500. See McDowell’s Colt Conversions book, pages 158-163. - s/n 2671 - antq - item #AC-2671 - $4,500 |

Remington - New Model Army - rare cartridge conversion variation, pictured in McDowell book - .44 CF, 8" oct. barrel. - Good to Very Good condition. - Barrel retains 60% nickel; barrel & cyl. gray w/ light pitting; good markings include large "23" conversion number on frame, barrel & cylinder, and "PAT APP’D FOR" on cylinder. Working; strong rifling. Generally good grips with OWA cartouche. .44 Colt / Rem. cartridge seems to fit in cylinder. This exact revolver is pictured & discussed on pages 65 & 66 of the McDowell "Colt Conversions" book. - There, he describes this as "a very unusual conversion in a gunsmith or Armory conversion", discussing the reshaped hammer spur and PAT marking, and notes that other such pieces have been observed. Quite possibly a rare & as yet not fully identified standard conversion variation. s/n 98921 antq #AZ-R98921 - $1,950 |

Starr Model 1858 - Army Model - cartridge conversion revolver - .45 cf (appears to chamber .45 Colt). - About good condition. - Dark plum patina metal w/ dings & usage marks; good markings include crown U proofs. Hand does not advance cylinder; otherwise hammer & trigger are working. Some individual pits in generally good bore. One piece wood grips, worn w/ usage marks. Assembly or conversion numbers include 25 & 7820, both numbers marked on both frame & barrel, and 46 marked on barrel and cylinder. - An interesting cartridge conversion incorporating a five shot replacement cylinder & the firing pin mounted in the frame, chambers recessed for cartridge head. I suspect this is an unidentified standard conversion type rather than an individual gunsmith project. Not discussed in McDowell, does anyone know more on this conversion? - s/n 20625 - antq - item #AZ-S625 - $1,250 |
