Colt - New Service - Chief of Police
presentation revolver w/ shooting award nightstick - .38 WCF; 7.5"
barrel. - Excellent condition. - Great historic law enforcement set. 24"
turned hardwood nightstick has a silver presentation plaque reading
"Presented by Chief McFarland to C.C. HEDRICK - Best Score at Police
Shooting Tournament Dec. 24 1898". Revolver sideplate is inscribed
"Presented to C.C. HEDRICK 1930". Previous owner reports that Hedrick had
become Chief of Police in Leavenworth Kansas during his career, and that
this revolver was a presentation upon retirement. Research in progress.
- Sideplate appears to have been refinished, probably after inscription.
Grip straps are turning plum. Elsewhere this revolver retains 97% of original
blue; with markings, bore, mech & grip all excellent. - s/n 271584 - FFL -

Russian & S&W Special - 5.5" barrel. - Excellent condition. - 95-97%

Special order Colt New Army
revolver - with unique features.
- .38 Long Colt; 6” barrel. - Condition is excellent plus. - Extremely crisp
metal with about 97% of the original bright Colt blue; slight wear on front
grip strap & cylinder edges; 99% nitre blue on hammer edges & trigger;
excellent markings. Recoil shield appears as almost unfired. Excellent
mech & bore. Smooth wood grips, quite rare on a civilian model, are in
excellent condition. RAC appears on bottom of barrel & bottom of left grip
panel, showing leftover military parts used for this special order gun.
Barrel patent dates of 1884, 88, & 95. Latest style frame w/ rear sight
groove relief & elimination of triggerguard step. With copy of a Colt
factory letter showing shipped July 2,1907, to John V. Varick Co. of
Manchester NH, 6”, .38/c, blue, wood, with Special Features of “Straight
cylinder and large bore”, one of two guns in the shipment. - These special
feature listings are a bit puzzling. My guess is that this late production
gun may have been special ordered with wood grips, and specified as
chambered for .38 Long Colt, NOT .38 Special. This would require the
earlier, slightly larger diameter bore, which would be obtainable by
utilizing a leftover earlier military barrel. Likewise, the wood grips
requirement would be easiest met by using leftover Army grips. Whatever the
explanation, it's an exceptional condition example, and a very rare
variation; I'd think a good one to snatch up now in this emerging collector
field. - s/n 279289 - C&R - item #HC-9289 - $2,350 |

Colt - U.S. Army Model 1901 - revolver, with holster. - .38
Colt; 6" barrel. - About fine under paint - A more interesting gun than I
thought when I first looked it. What looked like a bad refinish turned out
to be an old coat of paint that is fairly easy to rub off, with quite a bit
of blue underneath, maybe 80-90% on frame & cylinder, 60-70% on barrel.
Needs some more cleaning in crevices, but the stuff comes off with your
fingernail or light rub of brass wool. Good mech, bore & smooth wood grips.
Butt markings a bit faint, probably reworked by the military at some point.

Early Colt
US
Army .38 DA - reworked by Colt to US Army Model 1901 configuration - & then
by Remington for WWI Navy issue.
- .38
US
Svc; 6” barrel - About excellent metal; battered wood. - Cylinder & frame
90%, barrel 70% military refurbished bright blue. Mostly intact wood grip
have heavy usage marks. Good mech, excellent bore. Excellent markings
tell this gun's story. “US ARMY MODEL 1901” with 3 digit serial number &
lanyard ring on the butt show this as a Colt factory rework of an earlier US
model to 1901 configuration. - “L.E.B.” shows this gun went to Remington's
Bridgeport plant for a 2nd rework, this time for WWI military service. The
vast majority of the Rem reworks went to Navy service (altho Army marked).
Cylinder & yoke have the naval I in star inspector mark, w/ crane number not
matching rest of gun, suggesting perhaps a shipboard swap or replacement. - s/n 366 - C&R - item #HC-366

Colt -
US
Army Model 1896 military revolver - reworked by Colt to Model 1901
configuration, and so remarked.
- .38
US
Svc; 6” barrel - About fine condition. - About 70% Colt bright blue from
their rework of this revolver for the Army; fine markings. Seems to be
missing trigger return & hand springs; otherwise functional. Excellent
bore. Very good smooth wood military grips. - Revolver is in the Model
1896 s/n range, and was doubtless so originally manufactured. Per Colt's
practice, it was marked with US ARMY MODEL 1909 when they refurbished it for
the military & added the lanyard ring (now missing, but hole is there). See
Best's comments on page 182 of his book. - s/n 140789 - C&R -

Colt
US
Army Model 1901 - Remington rework for WWI - .38
US
Svc; 6” barrel - Excellent condition. - Extremely crisp metal; gripstraps
have about turned gray, but remainder of gun retains about 95% of what looks
to me like original bright Colt blue. “L.E.B.” marking on frame
indicates refurbishment by Remington for WWI issue, with the vast majority
of these “ARMY” marked reworks going to the Navy, but my guess would be that
it's unlikely this gun was refinished as part of that process, due to
quality of blue & crispness of other original Colt military markings (RAC's,
J.T.T., 1902, standard US ARMY butt markings, etc.) - Working; excellent
bore. Excellent replaced varnished smooth wood grips are a bit undersized.

US
Army Model 1901 - military revolver - unusual s/n - .38
US
Svc; 6” barrel - Fine condition. - Barrel & frame 80% bright Colt blue, cyl.
30%; excellent markings include usual US ARMY MODEL 1901 on butt, RAC
inspection marks, with matching numbers. Working; excellent bore. Minor
handling marks to military smooth wood grips. - As best I can tell, this
s/n is an orphan, too low to be an original 1901, but too high to be within
any of the known Army Model 1894 or 1896 purchases. Am I missing
something? I find this intriguing, but then, I amuse easily. - s/n

Colt
US
Army Model 1901 - military revolver
- .38
cal; 6” barrel. - Probably arsenal reworked; about excellent. - Maybe 85%
soft arsenal blue; bright nitre blue on hammer edges & trigger. Working
with heavy DA pull, excellent bore, good smooth wood grips. US ARMY top
portion of grip butt marking is no longer visible, whether lost during
rework or intentionally removed I can't say; J.T.T. acceptance is faint.
Other markings intact, including barrel w/ 1884, 88 & 95 patent dates, and
RAC inspector marks on bbl & cyl. - Bottom of barrel marked with P, K &
0564, so probably changed during rework or elsewhen. Front sight has been
lowered by filing. Bought this gun described as an Army 1894, & didn’t
check it out until it was too late to return. My loss, your gain, offered
for less than I paid for it. - s/n 179044 - C&R - item #HC-9044 -

Colt - New Army & Navy Revolver - .38
Colt; 4.5" barrel. - Fine to excellent condition. - Left side 97% original
bright nickel, right side more like 80% due to bubbling nickel sideplate &
barrel, & some loss of plating on cylinder (light gray metal well blended.
90% brilliant fire blue hammer edges, trigger & screws. Excellent markings
include 3 line barrel address ending in Mar 5 ’95 patent date. Very good
mech & bore. - According to Bob Best’s book on this model, the N stamped
in the yoke cutout of the frame would indicate a Civilian New Navy Model of
1895 revolver. However, the excellent hard rubber grips are the "Army"
pattern with the flowers flanking the rampant colt logo. The grips fit well,
but have the number "314" scratched inside each panel, suggesting they may
be off a different gun. - s/n 163355 - FFL - item # HC-16355 - $650 |
